Pedigrees of the 2019 Springboard Mile

Dialed In's Answer In is morning line favorite.
A $400,000 race with 10 Kentucky Derby points on offer to the winner, the Springboard Mile sees both local runners and shippers taking a shot at the final official Kentucky Derby prep race of 2019 with horses bred in three different states running here.

I’ve looked at each horse’s pedigree heading into the race to see who will be living up to a family tradition with a victory here and who will be breaking new ground with a Springboard Mile victory.

SCRATCHED: No. 1 – Piece of Work (Laurie’s Rocket): Arkansas-bred Piece Of Work is a half-brother to Flat Out’s Listed placed Flatoutandfoxy. The colt is out of the unraced Every Day is Good (El Corredor), who is a half-sister to two stake placed horses and the dams of five stakes horses – including three stakes winners. There is stakes class throughout the family with Piece Of Work’s granddam a half-sister to Horse of the Year Holy Bull and the dam of Grade 1 winner Sweet Symphony.

No. 2 – Alternate Time (Alternation): By Alternation, who is the sire of this year’s Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress, Alternate Time is out of 10-time winner and stakes placed Time For Etbauer (Etbauer). An undefeated colt, Alternate Time is a half-brother to stakes placed Time Share (Half Ours) and the winning Stephen Got Even winner Time Turner. While Alternate Time’s first three dams don’t have much blacktype, his fourth dam is the granddam of Grade 3 winner Kissin’ Jeb (Jeblar) and a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Buy The Firm (Affirmed).

No. 3 – Rowdy Yates (Morning Line): The winner of four of his six starts, the stakes winning Rowdy Yates is the only foal out of his Yes It’s True dam Spring Station. Spring Station is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Rich Mommy and out of a half-sister to Street Sense’s Grade 3 winner Motor City. This is a truly international family with horses out of his fourth dam racing in Europe – including Irish Two Thousand Guineas and Irish Derby placed Star Of Gdansk (Danzig Connection) so he should be easily able to get the distance here.

No. 4 – Answer In (Dialed In): The morning line favorite, Answer In is the first foal out of Broken Vow’s stakes placed D’Ya Knowwhatimean and bred on a proven cross. The Dialed In x Broken Vow cross has produced four winners from five runners while Broken Vow mares have produced seven stakes horses when bred to A.P. Indy grandsons (two being stakes winners). There are stakes horses under all five horses on Answer In’s page, led by Broken Vow’s Grade 2 winner Lonesome Street.

No. 5 – Jungle Runner (Candy Ride): The winner of the local prep at Remington Park, Calumet-bred and owned Jungle Runner is the first foal out of his Tapit dam Minx. Jungle Runner is a grandson of Listed placed Rutledge Affair (Colonial Affair), who is also the dam of Listed winner Colonel Rutledge (Orientate). The colt hails from the extended family of Italian champions Kathy Dream (Arcano), Rosendhal (Indian Ridge), and Plusquemavie (Kheleyf) and Turkish Champion Tarsus Beyazi (Banknote).

Midshipman
No. 6 – Shipman’s Song (Midshipman): A maiden winner last out, Oklahoma-bred Shipman’s Song is taking a big step up in class here but his family has shown that he has stakes potential in his pedigree. His granddam is also the granddam of two stakes place horses – including one by Midshipman – and his dam was a four-time winner. Third dam Evil’s Sister (Medieval Man) is the dam of Grade 3 winner Evil’s Pick and granddam of graded stakes winners Evil Minister (Deputy Minister) and Rocketazo (Spring At Last) so based on pedigree, it wouldn’t be too hard to see this gelding getting some blacktype.

No. 7 – Southgate (Dramedy): A son of the recently exported Dramedy, Southgate broke his maiden in stakes company and has two other stakes placings to his name. Southgate isn’t the only stakes horse under his winning dam Perfect Southerner (Dixieland Band) with his half-sister Baby K (Kennedy) second in Remington Park’s Oklahoma Classics Lassie Stakes in 2017. The gelding shares a family with Grade 3 winner and Kentucky sire Conveyance (Indian Charlie), Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty (Medaglia d’Oro), Grade 1 winning two-year-old Secret Hello (Private Account), and Grade 1 Blue Grass winner Monba (Maria’s Mon).

No. 8 – Embolden (The Factor): Virginia-bred Embolden is out of 15-time winner and two-time Listed winner Silver Heart (Lion Hearted) and by Grade 1 winning The Factor (War Front). Showing his skills as a sprinter in his first five starts, Embolden is stretching out here. He should have stamina for a mile on his side as his sire won the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and his dam won at up to a mile with her full sister winning at up to nine furlongs. Embolden is bred on a successful cross as his dam is a half-sister to the dam of The Factor’s Grade 1 winner Noted And Quoted, showing the stallion works well with the family.

No. 9 – Shoplifted (Into Mischief): One of two runners out of Yes It’s True mares in the Springboard Mile, Shoplifted has been competing at the highest levels this year with a second in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and a run in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last out. He is one of five winners from five to race out of his winning dam Shopit, who is a half-sister to Fifth Avenue (Monarchos) and the dam of Grade 2 winner Imprimis (Broken Vow). Shoplifted’s third dam is Shopping (Private Account), the dam of Grade 1 winner Miss Shop (Deputy Minister), who produced Grade 1 winner and successful broodmare Miss Shop.

No. 10 – Maximiliano (Quality Road): Wesley Ward-trained Maximiliano is one of the shippers in this race, coming to Oklahoma off a maiden win at Keeneland in October. A $235,000 weanling purchase and $425,000 yearling, Maximiliano is out of Listed placed Ben’s Boots (Louis Quatorze), a half-sister to three other stakes horses. By top sire Quality Road, there are stakes horses under his second through fifth dams with Ben’s Boots not yet producing a stakes horse but having three winners from four runners.

Flat Out
No. 11 – Kirkcules (Flat Out): By new Oklahoma resident Flat Out, Kirkcules could give his sire a big boost going into the breeding season if he defies his 30-1 odds and wins the Springboard Mile. The gelding is already stakes placed and out of a stakes winner, whose dam is also a stakes winner. He is one of two winners from two foals out of Gotagogotagogotago (Kipling) and comes from a family that has had a lot of regional success with four Oklahoma or Louisiana stakes horses under his first two dams with many of the 18 stakes winners under his first five dams regional stakes winners.

No. 12 – Slew Tang Clan (Honor Code): From the first crop of Champion Honor Code, Slew Tang Clan is hoping to visit the winner’s circle for the first time in the Springboard Mile. The colt is well suited to handle the distance here, his half-brother Bear’sway (TIzway) is a Listed winner while his half-sister is a two-time Grade 1 placed mare. But even more encouraging for his stamina is that his second dam is Grande Dame (Zen), the granddam of Grade 1 Travers winner Colonel John (Tiznow) and his Grade 1 winning steeplechase full brother Mr. Hot Stuff with their stakes placed full-sister producing Grade 3 winner Comical (Into Mischief). The colt has shown to like this track, finishing second twice at Remington.
