Checking In On: High Priced Fasig-Tipton July Sale Graduates

We travel to Kentucky for the fourth edition of this series where the Kentucky yearling sales season is quickly approaching with Fasig-Tipton’s July sale taking place on July 11.

This blog, we look back and see what the top 10 most expensive horses at this sale every year from 2013 to 2015 are up to. The 2016 graduates are not included in this blog as they are 2-year-olds and many 2-year-olds have not yet made a start.

2015 Fasig-Tipton July Sale

So Fancy (Tapit x French Dip – Speightstown filly) – The $500,000 sales topper, So Fancy has raced five times in her career, breaking her maiden in her fourth start at the end of December. She last raced on Feb. 18 and hasn’t had any works since that seventh place finish in the Wide Country Stakes.

Our Souper Star (Scat Daddy x Starbourne (IRE) – Sadler’s Wells colt) – Selling for $385,000, Our Souper Star was a $400,000 pinhook at the Fasig-Tipton Select 2-Year-Olds In Training sale last year. He has not yet raced and has no recent works.

Censure (Blame x Private Opinion – Deputy Minister gelding) – A $20,000 weanling, Censure came back less than a year later to sell for $335,000 at this sale. He has yet to break his maiden and is now a gelding. He last finished fifth on June 9, 2017 and has worked multiple times since that race.

Silencer (Quality Road x Out For Revenge - Bernardini filly) – The fourth most expensive horse in July 2015, Silencer made her first start in late November last year before breaking her maiden in her second start on June 24 of this year by a neck.

Princess Addy (Quality Road x She’s Justa Friend – Hussonet filly) – Returning to the Fasig-Tipton ring in February 2017, Princess Addy sold for $12,000 after selling for $300,000 as a yearling here. She hasn’t yet raced and has no recent works.

Quality Road had two horses in the top 10 at the 2015 sale.

Harlan’s Dynamo (Harlan’s Holiday x Woeful – Medaglia d’Oro gelding) – Harlan’s Dynamo has raced five times so far and has yet to hit the board. He hasn’t worked or raced since May 22, 2017.

Swimsuit Issue (Scat Daddy x Cover Girl Elle – Out of Place filly) – Winning in her first start in March by half a length, Swimsuit Issue was then third in a Keeneland allowance in April. Swimsuit Issue finished fifth on May 21 and seems to be on a break as she hasn’t worked since.

Monetary System (Ghostzapper x Her Smile – Include colt) – Reoffered as a 2-year-old and sold for $25,000, Monetary System has hit the board twice in five career starts. His last race was a sixth place finish on June 15, he returned to the work tab on July 1.

Inouye (Dialed In x Magic Smoke - Smokester colt) – Sold for $270,000, Inouye hasn’t yet raced and has no recent works.

Geom Noa (Malibu Moon x Storm’s Darling colt) – Sold for $270,000 at this sale, Geom Noa then brought $20,000 at the OBS June 2-Year-Olds and Horses in Training sale. Exported to South Korea, he has raced five times with his best being a third on June 17 of this year.

2014 Fasig-Tipton July Sale

Cowboy’s Hero (Cowboy Cal x Refugee – Unaccounted For colt) – Coming a year and a half after his half-sister Executiveprivilege won multiple Grade 1s and months after his half-brother Hoppertunity looked like he’d be one of the favorites for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby before an injury sidelined him, it was no surprise this colt was the $550,000 sale topper here. He RNAed as a 2-year-old for $600,000 and made his debut later that year. It took him five tries and nearly 20 months later but Cowboy’s Hero broke his maiden by 3 ½ lengths on July 6 of this year at Delaware Park.

Enlightened Bliss (Blame x Princess Birdeye – Indian Charlie colt) – The second most expensive purchase at $410,000, Enlightened Bliss has not yet raced and has no recent works.

Chicago Blues (Unbridled’s Song x Bet on the Blue – E Dubai gelding) – Running 14 times, Chicago Blues has one win and five other on-the-board finishes. He has run in claiming races in all but two of his starts but has never been claimed, though he started his career with Chuck and Maribeth Sandford and currently runs for owner-trainer Louie Roussel III. He last raced on July 8 where he finished second.

Opening Remark (Harlan’s Holiday x Invitation - Vindication colt) – Making 18 starts in his career so far, Opening Remark has one win and four other on-the-board finishes. While he broke his maiden in a maiden claimer early in his career (and was claimed), he spent the next seven starts in allowances and stakes before dropping to claimers full time in November of last year. He has not been claimed in any of those starts and has finished second in his last two starts, including on July 1, 2017.

Safe Passage (Congrats x Northern Station – Street Cry (IRE) gelding) – Safe Passage has hit the board in four of his 10 career starts and broke his maiden in his latest start on July 9. Sold as a 3-year-old at the Keeneland November sale last year for $20,000, Safe Passage has made seven starts this year, hitting the board in half of them with his last run coming on July 9.

Tough But Sweet (Candy Ride (ARG) x True Legacy (GB) – A.P. Indy gelding) – Making his debut in mid-June of his 3-year-old year, Tough But Sweet finished sixth. He came back two months later when he finished second by half a length. He hasn’t raced since and doesn’t have any recent works.

Majestic Endeavor (Lookin At Lucky x Her She Kisses – Dehere gelding) – Finishing second in his second start, Majestic Endeavor showed promise early on but took six more starts to break his maiden, dropping down to the maiden claiming ranks for a $7,500 tag when he won by 2 ½ lengths on June 7, 2017. His next start came on June 25 where he finished 10^th.

Conquest Harlequin (Harlan’s Holiday x Time for a Crown – Time For a Change gelding) – A $235,000 yearling, Conquest Harlequin won in his third start at Keeneland last April by 1 ¾ lengths. He hit the board three times after that last year, including after he was sold at the Conquest dispersal for $55,000. He won in his third start for his new connections and was claimed for $40,000 in the race. His most recent start was on June 26 where he finished second.

Lunar Empress (Malibu Moon x Holy Princess – Holy Bull filly) – A winner in her third start after finishing second twice before that, Lunar Empress has proven to be a very useful filly, only finishing off the board once in her 10 starts. Overall, she’s won twice and her fourth came in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes last December. Her last race was a third place finish in an allowance optional claiming race on April 14.

Conquest Enforcer (Into Mischief x Keen Victory – Victory Gallop colt) – Breaking his maiden in a stakes race as a 2-year-old, Conquest Enforcer won three straight stakes races before finishing third in the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes last August. Dropping back to the ungraded level, he won the Allied Forces Stakes then jumped back up to the graded stakes level where he finished third. Sold in the Conquest dispersal for $785,000 last November, he won the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes in his first start for his new connections then was third in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes. He’s tried a variety of surfaces and distances in his last three outs but his best finishes have been a pair of fifths. He last ran on June 10 when he finished 10^th in the Grade 3 Jaipur Invitational.

2013 Fasig-Tipton July Sale

Amaroni (Desert Party x Lil Cozette – Kris S mare) – Sold for the sales topping $460,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton after being an $85,000 weanling, Amaroni never raced. She was sold at the 2015 Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale for $27,000 and had a Caleb’s Posse colt in February of this year.

Affirmed Reality (Bellamy Road x Affirmed Dancer – Affirmed gelding) – A $420,000 yearling, Affirmed Reality has never raced and has no recent works.

Get Happy (Tapit x Sunny Morning – Tale of the Cat gelding) – After selling for $375,000 at this sale in 2013, he then brought down the hammer for $385,000 as a 2-year-old but wasn’t sold. He made his first start in August of his 3-year-old year when he finished sixth then returned nearly a year later where he made two off-the-board starts. He has no recent works.

Conquest Kronos (Kantharos x Candescent – Silver Deputy gelding) – Breaking his maiden in his second start in a maiden claiming races, Conquest Kronos has spent most of his time in the claiming ranks. He’s won two races so far in his career and finished second or third eight other times for $89,765 in earnings so far. He was sold to Pink N Blue Stable last November in the Conquest Stable dispersal for $22,000 and races for King Star who he won for in his third start after the auction. He’s finished in the top three in three of his six starts since the auction.

Conquest Splendida (Harlan’s Holiday x Rockin’ Kate – Seneca Jones mare) – Another Conquest Stable buy at this sale, Conquest Splendida never made it to the races and unfortunately has a death certificate on file at The Jockey Club that was filed in 2014.

Son of Oahu (Pioneerof the Nile x Honolulu Heat – Silver Deputy gelding) – After selling for $40,000 as a weanling, Son of Oahu sold for $260,000 at this sale. He’s won one of his 15 starts and finished in the top three five other times for earnings of $64,720 so far in his career. He was sold one other time after this sale, bringing $30,000 at the OBS Winter Mixed Sale as a 2-year-old. He last raced on June 21, 2017 and returned back to the work tab on July 8.

Born Special (Pulpit x Referendum – Unbridled mare) – Sold for $250,000 at this sale, Born Special never raced. She had her first foal, a New Year’s Day filly in 2016 and a Hard Spun filly this year.

Conquest Superstep (Super Saver x Dance Alexa – Southern Halo mare) – Sold for $97,000 as a weanling, Conquest Superstep was sold for $250,000 as a yearling to Conquest Stable. She broke her maiden in her fourth start after two second place finishes and won again two starts later before finishing second in the Fleet Indian Stakes at Saratoga. The filly went on a bit of a dry spell after that, finishing either fourth or fifth for seven straight starts but has finished second and third, respectively, in her last two starts this June and July. As part of the Conquest dispersal, she sold for $135,000 in November.

Gemonade (Lemon Drop Kid x A Little Gem – Yonaguska mare) – Sold for $210,000 here, Gemonade has spent most of her career in the claiming ranks where she’s won one start but finished in the top three 15 other times for $44,579 in 35 career starts. Her most recent start came on June 24 of this year.

Conquest Bespoke (Speightstown x Haute Couture – Medaglia d’Oro gelding) – Bought for $200,000, Conquest Bespoke must have been highly thought of, starting his race career in the 2014 Oak Tree Juvenile Stakes. Dropped back down into Maiden Special Weight races when he returned to the track a year later, he finished second in his second start then won his third. He raced two more times after that victory, not hitting the board in either start. Sold for $20,000 at the Conquest dispersal, Conquest Bespoke was sent to Trinidad and Tobago where he has had success. Winning his second race at the track, Conquest Bespoke has been second in two Grade 1 races at the track. According to Equibase, his latest race was the Grade 2 Arima Race Club Cup where he finished sixth on May 30, 2017.
