Pedigree Facts: Familiar Names in Pedigrees of Oklahoma Derby Winners

The 2018 Oklahoma Derby weekend celebrating Remington Park's 30th birthday is done and dusted but as one final look back, we’re examining the pedigrees of the 10 stakes winners on the card. While some of the winners are the standouts of their family, there are a few very recognizable names among the pedigrees of the winners.

Shakin It Up
Kip Deville Stakes – B. B. Dude was Shakin It Up’s first stakes winner earlier this year. One of six named foals out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Purrfect Song, he is also one of four winners from five to race from the mare. Purrfect Song is also a three-quarters sister to multiple Grade 1 placed Santa Catarina (Unbridled) and half-sister to Grade 2 Sanford Stakes second Power World (Distorted Humor).

Flashy Lady Stakes – Marquee Miss (Cowboy Cal) has one of the stronger pedigrees you’ll see of the Oklahoma Derby day winners as a half-sister to Grade 1 winning 3-year-old Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford) and a full sister to the 11-time winner and multiple stakes placed Marquee Cal Gal (Cowboy Call). Their dam Marquee Delivery (Marquetry) is a multiple Grade 3 placed mare who has produced four winners from four to race.

E. L. Gaylord Memorial Stakes - By Kantharos, who did well enough as a Florida stallion to warrant being moved to Kentucky, Adventurous Lady looks like another serious horse for the stallion. She is the first foal out of the winning Pioneerof the Nile mare Ari the Adventurer, who was a $350,000 2-year-old. Adventurous Lady’s second dam was a listed stakes winner who has produced five to win from five to race. This family has six stakes winners under her first five dams but none have won a graded stakes.

Red Earth Stakes – Sixteen-time winner Perfect to Please (Pleasantly Perfect) is a war horse with 68 starts to his name. In those starts he has two stakes wins (both in this race) and a slew of stakes placings for over $520,000 in earnings – he was bought for $15,000. His dam Your Pleasure (Forest Wildcat) was a winner herself and has two winners from two starters with her filly by Evansville Slew winning six races. She is a half-sister to multiple listed winner Royal Pleasure (Royal Academy) and Grade 3 runner-up In Jest (Dynaformer) with Perfect to Please’s third dam being Grade 1 winner Creaking Board (Night Shift).

Welder
David M. Vance Stakes – Five-year-old Welder (The Visualizer) has 13 wins in 21 starts to his name but isn’t the most accomplished horse under his dam Dance Softly (Tiznow) by wins, with his half-brother Dance Floor Maniac (Eurosilver) winning 24 times. This is a tough, consistent family with seven horses under his first three dams having five or more wins. This is also the family of Grade 1 winner Bond Holder (Mineshaft), who was also fourth in a pair of Grade 1 races.

Governor’s Cup Stakes – A son of Street Boss (Street Cry), Hence’s first dam is the dam or granddam of four stakes horses. Second dam Ballerina Princess (Mr. Prospector) is the granddam of multiple graded stakes winner and sire Marchfield (A.P. Indy), who is out of multiple Grade 1 runner up and Canadian Broodmare of the year Pico Teneriffe (Red Ransom), who also produced Congor Bay (Speightstown). Ballerina Princess is also the granddam of the bad luck multiple Grade 1 winner Devil May Care (Malibu Moon) and sire Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor) with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Minister Eric (Old Trieste) also featuring in the family.

Bob Barry Memorial Stakes – The only stakes winner for her dam Untamed Beauty (Rahy), Gianna’s Dream (Twirling Candy) comes from a fine extended family as one of 30 stakes winners under her first three dams. This is the immediate family of hot California sire and Grade 1 winner Square Eddie (Smart Strike) with his dam Forty Gran (El Gran Senor), Untamed Beauty’s half-sister. In addition to 30 stakes winners, this family also includes six stakes placed horses.

Lone Sailor
G3 Remington Park Oaks – As you would expect from a Godolphin-bred, She’s a Julie’s (Elusive Quality) page is deep. She is out of a winning Dubai Millennium mare who is also the granddam of stakes winner Ambassadorial (Elusive Quality). She’s a Julie’s second dam is the graded stakes winning Parade Queen (A.P. Indy) who is probably best known as the dam of Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), who produced multiple Grade 1 winner and Kentucky Derby sire Bodemeister (Empire Maker) and multiple Grade 1 placed Fascinating (Smart Strike). The winner of $450,530, She’s a Julie was a $160,000 yearling purchase.

G3 Oklahoma Derby – By expatriated stallion Majestic Warrior (A.P. Indy), Lone Sailor is the only foal to race out of Ambitious (Mr. Greeley). His second dam is Grade 1 winner Aldiza (Storm Cat), who was quite the broodmare with two stakes winners and her daughters producing horses like Far From Over (Blame) and Timeline (Hard Spun). This is also the family of Althea (Alydar) and Green Desert (Danzig). Althea is the granddam of Arch (Kris S.) and Green Desert was an influential sire.

Ricks Memorial Stakes – One of four named foals out of Cozshesaidso (Empire Maker), nine-time winner Adore (Big Brown) is also one of three winners from the mare but the only stakes winner. Her second dam is the winning mare Brink (Forty Niner), whose stakes placed daughter Stoic (Forestry) is the dam of Peru champion Ole Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus) and stakes placed Cetrina (Riyadian). While there aren’t any graded stakes winners up close, there are 17 stakes winners or placers under her first three dams. One step back to the fourth dam gives you a connection to Boundary (Danzig), who interestingly enough is Adore’s grandsire, giving her a 3 x 4 cross to his dam Edge (Damascus).
